Performing Arts

While Performing Arts allow children to develop creative passions, they simultaneously teach children language and communication skills, helping them to communicate effectively with others with confidence.

Performing Arts are all about self-expression, exploring alternative options and embracing individuality. So why not join, West End Musical Star, Maria Coyne, on a whistle-stop tour of what it takes to become an inspirational star!

Playing any musical instrument sharpens fine motor skills, improves dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Music has also been shown to reduce heart and respiratory rates, cardiac complications, and to lower blood pressure and increase immune response. Music helps children with language development. It has been proven to raise IQ and even make the brain work harder, for both children and adults. It’s good for the body, mind, and soul.

Participating in music, as well as listening to it, can have a way of making people happy. It can help fight depression and anxiety. Not only does learning music help you hone a new skill, but it also helps you heal yourself and others through the power of music. Playing the piano also makes your hands and arm muscles much stronger than the average person.

Coding is a basic literacy in the digital age, and it is important for students to understand and be able to work with and understand the technology around them.

Having children learn coding at a young age prepares them for the future. Coding helps children with communication, creativity, mathematics, writing, and confidence. In week 2 of Sophia Camp the younger age group will be doing a course on Scratch, whilst the older children will be looking at developing their Python coding skills.

So, join us on our whistle-stop tour and investigate why Scratch and Python have become such important computer languages to study.

The very basis of science is a system of thought and experiment called the scientific method. These important thinking skills can be applied in many areas of study.

To give a child practice with these thinking skills, is like giving vitamins to a developing mind. Science feeds a natural love for learning. In this way, science is one of the most important subjects that students will study, because it gives them the critical thinking skills they need in every subject.

Creative writing encourages students to exercise their creative minds and practice using their imaginations. It improves their ability to come up with alternatives. This broadens their thought processes, which can lead to success in many areas, including problem solving and analysis.

This has become one of our most requested courses. So, join us on our whistle-stop tour and create descriptions and stories that are full of creative and imaginative flair. Who amongst you is the next Roald Dahl or J.K.Rowling?

There are huge benefits to studying and creating Art. These include:

Imagination and Creativity. Children can take their experiences of the world and transform them through art, making new connections and relationships through their inventive minds. Their knowledge, memories and fantasies all feed their imagination. Art allows children to explore, build on and record their own creative and imaginative ideas.

Expression. Making pictures allows children to express their feelings and ideas, both as a means of self-expression and to communicate to others. These may include reliving a happy event they recently experienced (a birthday party or a day out), or drawing out some sad feelings as a therapeutic exercise. Older children may use pictures for more conceptual purposes, expressing their concerns and ideas.

Visual thinking. Pictures encourage us to think about and understand the world visually, instead of restricting learning and the acquisition of knowledge to words and numbers alone. Visual thinking helps children learn other subjects. It is a skill used in a wide variety of professions, including the sciences as well as the arts.

Observational skills. Making pictures helps children observe the subject matter of the real-world scene they are drawing from more closely, and makes them better observers of detail in the world around them. Developing observational skills through picture-making facilitates the child’s visual sensitivity to the world.

Problem solving and analytical skills. Pictures enable children to explore and test out ideas, while making decisions on how they choose to depict them. For instance, children will learn problem-solving skills as they grapple with trying to create a three-dimensional scene from the world on a two-dimensional page. With practice, children learn that concentration and persistence allow them to get closer to the pictures they are trying to achieve.

How it works
Sophia X Camps explained.

Sophia Camp connects motivated learners, passionate teachers and parents together to create great learning experiences. Our Team of qualified, vetted educational professionals and subject specialists offer their expertise to students and share their passions via our live online courses.

Sophia Camp courses meet in real time using video conferencing platforms such as Bramble.io and Skype Group Call. All course offerings are determined by the teachers who run them.

Our Sophia Camp sessions provide the opportunity for children to share meaningful social experiences which enrich learning, during an unprecedented time when the closure of schools, due to COVID19, prevents children from engaging in social experiences which are crucial for learning. Nothing can replace a great mentor or exploring ideas with peers.
