Compassionate tutor, who in her spare times volunteers to help asylum seekers and refugees settle into the UK, offering help with English; she also enjoys teaching English as an additional language and helping students with learning support.
Raised in rural Devon, Verity spent her childhood balancing her education with extracurricular pursuits, before developing a love of humanities subjects. This led her to Oxford University’s pre-university course, UNIQ, and subsequently to Exeter University, where she was awarded consecutive Dean’s Commendations for her academic work in theology and English Literature. Many of her academic tutors were extremely engaging, and so she was inspired to give back the gift of learning.
Verity’s desire to teach motivated her year-long volunteering experience as an English tutor to asylum seekers and refugees, many of whom were isolated by language and culture. This experience taught her the importance of fostering trust when supporting students who come from diverse backgrounds, and who feel disconnected from their peers. More recently, Verity worked for a Shanghai-based tutoring company, where she supported students aged between 4 and 16 with their English studies. She has also worked as a teaching assistant at a secondary school, where she gave academic and pastoral support to deaf students who were studying for their GCSEs.
Verity believes a tutor’s role is twofold: they should not only help their student to access a subject, but boost their student’s learning confidence. In order to do this, it is important to set clear targets and, over the course of each lesson, achieve them in a meaningful way. She tailors her teaching style to students’ individual strengths and interests, making sure that each learning project is personalised to their goals and that they are able to work at their own pace to accomplish them.
Outside of tutoring, Verity is most passionate about reading. She enjoys scouting out little-known writers of short stories and novels, and she subscribes to a number of literary magazines. She loves discussing students’ favourite books, and prides herself on being able to recommend stories for any interest and age group. Verity also really enjoys volunteering, and she is currently helping students to prepare for their IELTS exams through RefuAId.
