Erika completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in geography (human environment) and graduated with Great Distinction from Concordia University in Canada. She was also the recipient of the Canadian Association of Geographers Undergraduate Award. Erika then obtained a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) at the University of Queensland in Australia and received the Dean’s Commendation for Academic Excellence. Upon her arrival in the UK, Erika was awarded QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). Further to this, she also holds a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate from an accredited TEFL school.
Erika has been teaching in the UK for the past four years and has acquired valuable experience teaching Key Stage 3, GCSE and A-Level Geography as well as French and EAL. She is familiar with multiple exam boards including iGCSE, AQA and Edexcel A and B. Erika has worked at both mixed and all-girls’ state and independent schools. Additionally, she has extensive international teaching experience and has taught EAL as a primary school teacher at a school in Thailand.
Above all, Erika want to ensure her students develop a love for learning. To achieve this, she introduces teaching methods which will make learning more interactive, engaging and hands-on. Erika encourages her students to tap into background knowledge about a topic which makes the subject more relevant and meaningful to them. She understands that all students learn differently and, consequently, adapts her teaching to meet their learning needs. She frequently uses assessment for learning strategies throughout the lesson to ensure her students are understanding the new content. Erika is very approachable and supportive and she encourages her students and/or parents to express any concerns they may have. She will then take this information into consideration when preparing her lessons.
Erika is very interested in sports and, when she was younger, was a high-level athlete in both triathlon and speed skating. Although she is no longer actively competing, she still enjoys running and cycling. Erika practises yoga frequently and will be completing a yoga and meditation teacher-training course later this year. She is very interested in nutrition to achieve optimal health. Moreover, she also enjoys travelling to different countries and learning about culture and history.
