Highly qualified and experienced (25 years) teacher offering chemistry from KS3 to postgraduate level and GCSE physics.

Alastair holds a PhD chemistry from the University of Southampton and a BSc(Hons) chemistry degree from University of Exeter; he is also a QTS secondary science teacher. He also has experience as a Higher Education qualified lecturer in the University of Wales, Bangor. Alastair has taught KS3 and KS4 sciences and A level chemistry as a fully qualified teacher for secondary school education since 2006 and has extensive teaching experience at university level as a lecturer in organic chemistry. Alastair is confident and experienced in teaching all three sciences, biology, physics and chemistry to GCSE.

At A-level, Alastair has taught the entire chemistry course, with previous students achieving the highest grades in AQA, Edexcel and OCR examinations. Throughout his career, Alastair has also worked as an examiner at both A-level and GCSE. During the last three years he has been a Practical Endorsement Visiting Monitor for A level chemistry and sciences, moderating and marking coursework in the linear A level exam.

Alastair has helped students prepare for Oxbridge interviews through extension lessons beyond the A-level specification, and has coached students for technical interviews. For clients seeking foundation and university support, Alastair has taught introductory chemistry for non-specialist undergraduate students, as well as organic chemistry and analytical chemistry to students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, whilst as a lecturer in organic chemistry and more recently as a tutor.

Alastair bases his approach to tutoring on the student’s needs, developing their prior knowledge, building confidence in their learning and problem-solving skills, whilst developing their exam technique. He develops the student’s learning experience at school or at university and provides both additional resources and practice questions. His students are encouraged to develop their knowledge and an appreciation of what examiners require by developing their assessment for learning skills. Alastair enjoys tutoring and his students have all benefited enormously from individualised support in preparation for their examinations. Students enjoy the tutorial style lessons which are normally one hour in duration, but longer times can be arranged if required.

Outside of Education, Alastair enjoys swimming to keep fit and experimenting with new cuisine in his lab – the kitchen!
